’Tis the season to be jolly, falalalala… No better time to sit back, reflect over the past months and think about what is yet to come. I love how Winter always puts me in a cosy mood – the crisp cold mornings, snug evenings at home with the christmas tree in the background, my dog and boyfriend cuddled up next to me… There’s something about the month of December that gets me all nostalgic and thankful for what I have in life. That is why, when Rituals asked me to think about what “Opening Your Heart” means to me, I immediately thought it would be an easy task to come up with an answer. Little did I know that, when trying to write this post, it would be difficult to keep it short! I guess thinking about what it means to Open Your Heart really opened up my mind for all the things I am truly grateful for.
There are a million things I am grateful for in my life and a lot of people I am thankful to. My biggest worry used to be that I would not be happy with my future self, that I wouldn’t find my place in work, in life, in love… When I reflect on how I feel right now and when I look at all of the things I have in my life, I can honestly say I am happy. I am content with life, even though I will always strive for more. I am beyond grateful for the crazy creatures that brighten up my days, for the challenges that cross my path and for the warmth I get to feel.
It wasn’t always like this and I haven’t always felt this content with my life. But that is exactly what it means to me, when we talk about opening your heart: You have to keep an open mind and an open heart. You have to see the good that happens in life, and you have to embrace the mistakes, the flaws and the downfalls, in order to truly appreciate what it means to be happy. More often than not, I hear people complain about the things that are lacking in their lives – without doing something to change it. My advise: take it into your own hands, change what you want to change and stop to think about the things you do have in life that you are happy about. Don’t like where you’re heading to job-wise? Turn things around and don’t be afraid to take a risk. Same goes for all aspects in life I guess – if you’re unhappy with where you are, who you are, where you’re going or who you’re going there with… Change it! As long as you open your heart for possibilities, I believe everything will work out eventually.
My biggest joys in life are my friends, my family and my precious puppy. Golden retriever Lewis has the ability to literally brighten up my day. He looks at me with this big puppy eyes and boom, my heart fills with joy. The early wake-up calls, the rainy walks while its still dark in the morning, the hours I spend vacuuming the house… It doesn’t matter, none of it, because there are so many more beautiful moments I get to experience thanks to him.
Earlier this year I became auntie of my brother’s firstborn. My darling godchild Ebe stole my heart the first second I laid eyes on him. Seeing how this precious little human brings the family together, how he manages to put a smile on everybody’s faces is truly something to cherish.
This holiday season, I would like to ask you to think about what it means to open your heart too. And maybe next year, in 2018, we can all try to reflect a little more on the things we have to be grateful for. Create your own personal #OpenYourHeart video on the Rituals website and say thank you to those who matter most in a cute and original way. I’m sharing my little video below, create your own here.
